HOKKAIDO KOMAGATAKE ERUPTION

March 9th - 13th, 1996

There are no significant changes in the last six days since Komagatake's small eruption.
Nanae disbands its headquarters, and elementary schools and junior high schools which
had been closed since the 6th in four towns start their classes on the 11th. 
The Sapporo Meteorological Agency on March 10th, 8:00 p.m. reports no subterranean
movements of the magma or volcanic tremors. The observation team in Mori on the same day,
8:00 a.m. ,reports white smoke rising 300m, but later in the day clouds covering
Komagatake reduce visibility.
Nanae disbans headquarters in Higashi Onuma Seikatsukan (Higashi Onuma area center) and
rename it "observation team". 3-4 town officials continue to track Kamagatake.
The schools which had been closed in four towns (Nanae,Mori, Sawara and Shikabe) start
their classes, but students' parents and teachers need to accompany students to and
from schools in Mori and Sawara.
Hokkaido prefecture surveys Komagatake for a third time from a helicopter.
The team in Mori consists of representatives from five towns, and authorities have a talk
about what they should do.

March 9th,16:00 ...The ninth statement from the team in Mori. the observation team in Mori 15:00 : white smoke rising 800m,blowing straight up the team Mori 14:15 : white smoke rising 900m,blowing straight up crevices and crater cannot be seen. volcanic tremors : 9th (midnight -15:00) none March 1st to 9th 8times subterranean shifting : none reported since 5th at 18:00 March 10th, 8:30 ...Higashi Onuma Elementary School is still canceled but classes resume on the 11th. Match 10th,18:00 ...The headquarters in Higashi Onuma are disbanded and Nanae establishes its observation team. March 11th, 9:30 ...The observation team is run by two town officials from the Public Works Section who track Komagatake all day long. March 13th,13:30 ...According to the authorities at a meeting of the team in Mori, Komagatake is expected to settle down its volcanic activity. March 13th,18:30 ...At a meeting at 18:00 by representatives from five towns,they decide to disban each of thier headquarters. Nanae disbans its observation team. Five towns keep having a few town officials to track Komagatake.
